An omnibus Government bill — one that bundles many small changes together — making minor, technical fixes to laws about Māori affairs. It updates around eight Acts, including the Māori Community Development Act 1962, Te Ture Whenua Māori (Māori Land) Act 1993 and the Māori Language Act 2016, and repeals three old Māori Purposes Acts that no longer do anything. The aim is to remove outdated wording, correct errors and cut administrative burden, not to change policy.
Māori Purposes Bills are a periodic housekeeping vehicle used to clear away obsolete or erroneous provisions across Māori-related law. This one is administered by Te Puni Kōkiri (the Ministry of Māori Development). Because the changes are technical rather than policy shifts, it has attracted little debate.
