This Government bill seeks parliamentary authorisation of the individual appropriations contained in the Estimates of Appropriations for the Government of New Zealand for the year ending 30 June 2027. It is still before Parliament.
The main annual budget bill. It seeks Parliament's legal authority for the government to spend public money in line with the Estimates of Appropriations for the year ending 30 June 2027 — the detailed breakdown of what each area of government (each 'Vote', such as Health or Education) is allowed to spend. It is the mechanism by which the spending set out in Budget 2026 is given lawful effect.
It gives effect to Budget 2026, delivered by Finance Minister Nicola Willis on 28 May 2026. Authorising government spending in this way is a constitutional requirement, because Parliament controls public spending. Governing parties defend the Budget's priorities and the choices it funds, while opposition parties typically criticise those priorities and argue the money should be directed differently.
