The companion bill divided out of the Parliament Bill omnibus (Parts 8-11). It repeals the four Acts the new Parliament Act replaces - the Clerk of the House of Representatives Act 1988, Parliamentary Service Act 2000, Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Services) Act 2013, and Parliamentary Privilege Act 2014 - plus the Legislative Council Abolition Act 1950, and makes consequential amendments across the statute book. It passed its third reading on 6 November 2025 and is now law.
This bill repeals the four Acts that a new consolidated Parliament Act replaces, being the Clerk of the House of Representatives Act 1988, the Parliamentary Service Act 2000, the Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Services) Act 2013, and the Parliamentary Privilege Act 2014, together with the Legislative Council Abolition Act 1950, and makes consequential amendments across the statute book. It is the companion bill to the main Parliament Bill, carrying the repeals and tidy-up needed for the consolidated law to operate.
As a repeals-and-amendments companion to a consolidation exercise, it is largely mechanical, ensuring the statute book is consistent once the new Parliament Act is in place. Discussion of such bills usually centres on the substance of the main consolidation rather than the consequential repeals themselves.
