A member's bill from National MP Rima Nakhle that would change the Public Finance Act 1989 to stop the Crown and its agencies from giving public money — directly or indirectly — to organisations that are run, administered by, or associated with gangs. Agencies would have to carry out due diligence to check that funds do not reach gangs, and providing such funds without reasonable excuse could become an offence.
Nakhle says taxpayer money should not end up with gangs, pointing to past grants to gang-linked programmes. Critics, including the Law Society, do not oppose the aim but flag practical concerns — such as who could be prosecuted and how agencies would trace money 'all the way through to the end recipient' — and suggest changes to make it workable.
