This Government bill gives effect to the iwi-specific redress in the Ngāti Rāhiri Tumutumu deed of settlement (signed 26 September 2025) that requires legislation, and settles the iwi's historical Treaty of Waitangi claims in the Hauraki region. It records the Crown's acknowledgements and apology, and provides financial and commercial redress valued at $5.5 million alongside cultural and relationship redress; Ngāti Rāhiri Tumutumu also receives redress through the Pare Hauraki Collective Redress Deed. It passed its third reading on the voices on 12 May 2026 (put together with the Ngāti Tara Tokanui and Ngāti Hei bills) and is now the Ngāti Rāhiri Tumutumu Claims Settlement Act 2026.
This bill gives effect to the Ngati Rahiri Tumutumu deed of settlement, signed with the Crown in September 2025, settling the iwi's historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. It records the Crown's acknowledgements and apology and provides the redress in the deed that requires legislation, for an iwi of around 510 members whose area of interest spans Te Aroha, the Kaimai Range, the Hauraki Plains, and the Coromandel Peninsula, negotiated within the wider Hauraki settlement process.
Treaty settlement bills give legal effect to agreements already negotiated and signed, so debate usually centres on honouring the settlement and its specific redress rather than the principle of settling. Discussion can include the adequacy and finality of the redress and how overlapping interests among Hauraki iwi are managed.
